Kira, I thought is was mandatory as a US citizen or western tourist to have an escort in Lybia at all times, including while in Tripoli. If that not the case, I would much prefer to explore Tripoli and the medina with a friend without an escort attracting attention.
I do not see how that is a problem. Temehu is asking for extra euros for an escort who probably does not speak english for three days in Tripoli. That seems like a lot of money for someone who is not an english speaking guide.

The museum on Green Square has a few English speakers, you hear snippets from time to time. The pick-up beside us decided I was a threat to national security whilst travelling at kph and drove alongside us yelling at my driver to get off at the next junction to see the police. The police chuckled when he saw the 'threat' my small camera with tourist photos on it My clients were upset about it and said the pick-up truck guy who vanished when he saw the lack of incriminating evidence!
